Compliance is a big part of ensuring that tuna fisheries and the ocean environment are maintained sustainably for current and future generations. A large number of binding rules (called management and conservation measures) contain clauses that help the WCPFC and the nations of the Western and Central Pacific Ocean to monitor fishing. All vessels operating in the area must implement and comply with the measures, which countries use to assess compliance, identify any needs for help or change, and respond to non-compliance. They examine all obligations, from licensing to fish, to fishing effort and catch, to landing catches in port or transhipping, to authorisations and reporting.
